Marie Payne ARTIST STATEMENT

Handwoven cloth and the actual work of handweaving represent a very real connection to the distant past in general and also to my immediate past. All the influential women in my youth had a strong connection to threads, yarn and cloth. My woven cloths become representations of relationships. Colours and yarns meet, intersect and change as they interact with one another, just as relationships with others impact on my life to varying degrees. Some relationships remain, some change and some fade away. All these experiences enrich my life in some way, and so all the various colours and yarns work together to make a rich and interesting piece of cloth.

Thanks are due to each of these significant women in my young life that showed me how much loving and caring are transferred through generations by way of cloth - Clara Elizabeth Cairns/Payne and Anita Zudora Cairns/Stacey.
